THE FIRST FRIENDSHIPS

Family and School are the first agents of socialisation. The early years of a child’s life are essential in this process.

Many families choose to take their baby to a Nursery School, as it provides an ideal environment for them to begin forming relationships with their peers and making their first friends. School palys a significant role because it is where children learn and reinforce values, norms, and that ideas contribute to development of their identity and the connection they form with others and their surroundings.

At school, children explore their environment, meet new adults and classmates, observe, cuddle, share toys and learn together. They become familiar with their surroundings and begin to form their first social relationships, through gestures, smiles, and shared activities.

It is typical, around the age of two, for children to start forming their first friendships, often bases on similarities in personality, play styles, or interests.

“We can consider our preschool classmates to be our first friends, and some of those friendships last a lifetime”
