Does your child eat well? Why doesn’t my daughter eat vegetables? Concern about feeding our children is totally natural and understandable.
Each child has a ‘feeding style’, just as we are born with a certain temperament, there are children who lack appetite, children who have a very good appetite and enjoy eating and trying new flavors and textures. There are interindividual differences in nutrition that are normal, there is no need to worry or compare with other children. It is common for them to have a hard time trying new things, to cling to the breast or bottle and not want a spoon, to eat little or only certain foods. It is part of the development process and sometimes it is not as easy as we can see in pediatrics manuals, child nutrition blogs…
From the School we leave you some tips to improve your children’s eating habits:
- Respect rhythms, do not introduce foods or changes early. Up to six months exclusive breastfeeding or artificial breastfeeding. From there, and following the pediatrician’s recommendations, gradually introduce solids and new foods.
- Patience and perseverance. Let him try the same foods cooked in different ways. If he doesn’t want it, wait a few days and try again.
- If he does not want to eat, do not force him or keep him in front of the plate for a long time, do not save the same plate for snack and then for dinner. Do not follow the child with food all over the house.
- The proper way to do it is; present the food on the table, give him a reasonable and normal time to eat it. And after that time, remove the food. Do not offer him anything for dessert “because he has barely eaten.”
- Eating as a family is very important, children learn a lot through modeling or imitation. Respect meal times.
- You don’t have to eat all kinds of vegetables or fruit. If he likes three or four vegetables, give him those more often, and little by little introduce new ones.
- Prevent food from being a currency. Be patient with changes.
